OK, you'd have to be over 50 years old, but just a few decades ago, the relationship between women and alcohol was very different. Women did drink, but it was more of a subdued, closet, or not brash sort of drinking. Social wine was OK, but just not as boisterous and "Mommy's Time Out Wine" was not on the radar... not at all.
A "drug" is defined as "a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body." That's it. Drugs by definition are not good or bad, and illegal or legal is completely subjective based on societal norms.
Societies typically make 'illegal' certain drugs that provide little benefit, but a lat of harm to self and others, physically, financially and emotionally. It's simply a practical thing, sort of. Make it 'illegal' to slow people down from needing these harmful drugs. Make the drug use "criminal illegal" to get users out of society.
