Per Wiki - Ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, drinking alcohol, spirits, or simply alcohol) is an organic chemical compound. It is a simple alcohol ... naturally produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts or via petrochemical processes such as ethylene hydration. It has medical applications as an antiseptic and disinfectant. It is used as a chemical solvent and in the synthesis of organic compounds. Ethanol is an alternative fuel source.
So, the base chemical (Ethanol) for Beer, Wine, Gin, Vodka, Bourbon... etc. is used as an Antiseptic, a Solvent, and a Fuel Additive. It is also to humans when you ingest it, "a central nervous system depressant, ethanol is one of the most commonly consumed psychoactive drugs."
Picture yourself from another planet. You observe all the 'wild' animals, then you observe humans, ingesting this poison in large quantities, selling it everywhere, causing massive self-harm, killing millions of their own kind every year, and limiting their own potential exponentially. Next to the Lemming migrating off cliffs and Whales beaching themselves occasionally, human self-harm is persistently staggering and pervasive like a global cancer.
So WHY? Why do we do this?
Medically, it's a "Brain Pain" aspirin, so when you are stressed, full of anxieties and fears, it is clinically (and physically) soothing to take a brain numbing psychoactive drug. Fun actually, for a bit.
Socially, it's too often like the Billy Joel song... "sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone. Social anthropological tribal fears (aka Frat Parties) where you don't know people drives high fears, where the brain numbing psychoactive drug releases tensions and gives you that liquid courage. Albeit, sometimes embarrassingly so.
Financially, it's a huge money maker for a few, your customers get addicted to your product, and sales growth is compounded year over year for a century in the USA since Prohibition ended! Wow! Good right? Except for the hundreds of millions who lose their life savings, and many their lives to the addiction and related harms.
A Thesis paper could be written on the Harms... or read this page.
Knowing all this, "Changing Thinking" for us is need for an alternative message, the other voice that says "Less is More", that you "Don't" need to drink. A "Counter Marketing" campaign.
"You must unlearn what you have learned" said Yoda.
Let's dissect this Marketing tool the Alcohol Industry Uses in their Liquid Mind Games.
"DRINK RESPONSIBLY" - Psychologically, they are encouraging recreational use of depressant, psychoactive drugs that are poison and cause cancers to breast and bowel and eventually kill 1 in 10 Working age adults in the United States. What is "responsible" about self-harm? A more rigorous assessment would be "DRINK SELFISHLY AND IRRISPONSIBLY THIS HARMFUL TOXIC POISON, AND TRY NOT TO HURT OTHERS, THAT IS BAD FOR SALES. Not a great Bumper Sticker.
Too dramatic? Look to Ireland In recent years, the Alcohol Industry was literally been "influencing" the country. People in Ireland are drinking too much, causing bad press, dying too fast. That's bad for sales. The industry is interceding and trying to get people to "Drink More Responsibly". Dead people can't buy alcohol and the vibe is bad for sales apparently. Big alcohol calculate they "contribute €2B to the economy" That sounds great, but like so many things, it's half the story. When the total COST is calculated - in Health, Crime and more, they lose closer to €3B to their economy. In essence, the Irish are paying €1 Billion to hurt themselves and have many die young, lowered productivity, more abuses, less productivity and more.
THE ANSWER? It's simple. Only took me over 7 years and 30,000+ articles read to think of it.
We simply encourage everyone to be the best them they can be. Seriously, it's that simple. But it's not easy.
Take NO medications for Body or Brain unless you absolutely need them... and only for as long as needed. May you never need Flu Medicine, Body Pain Meds. May you never need Alcohol for Brain Stress. "Medicating Responsibly" is to stop taking meds when symptoms are gone, and seek professional help when you need OTC (over the counter) meds like Aspirin or Alcohol for more than a few days running.
Alcohol use is a "Symptom" - and Alcohol Abuse is a symptom of a large brain pain. Just like an elbow sprain, if it gets worse, and you are seeking codeine, there is a deeper problem.
No laws, no prohibition, no punishment, no stigma. Just "Changing Thinking"
"Alcohol - Take only as Needed for Severe Brain Pain. Product is cancerous (breast and bowel), addictive, a depressant and a brain neurotoxin that disrupts sleep and may add anxiety for anyone, any age." That would be a great honest warning label.
Less Screen Time, More People and Nature time, volunteer, call people, talk, relax, meditate and give your brain a rest. "Less is More". As they say - Being Chill - Doesn't Kill. (just made that up actulally).
Enjoy a glass of Water - That's responsible. Beer, Wine - that's irresponsible, but that's OK if you need to, I take cold meds when I am sick, and Tylenol after a long exercise session. I just take care of the fat blob in my cranium, No TV, limited screen time and lots of Dog play time outside. Whatever works for you, to be the best you, least medications, is a good system.
Hope this helps in your journey of "Changing Thinking!"
